Versatile Peppermint and Lavender: Using Essential Oils for Migraines

Posted by on

In an ever-changing world of medicine, exploring natural remedies and ancient cures can be equally as important as new advancements in healthcare. Essential oils have been used for hundreds of years to treat a variety of ailments including nausea, skin blemishes, and even migraines. The increased popularity of aromatherapy in recent years has inspired users to also find topical uses of the oils for many ailments.

Cooling peppermint and soothing lavender are using essential oils for migraines. Using these oils can alleviate the symptoms of a migraine as well as reduce stress and tension in the body to assist in healing migraines. Unlike many pharmaceuticals, essential oils do not have the same potentially harmful side effects. Some medications used to treat migraines can cause stomach ulcers, for example, which is something that essential oils do not put the body at risk of.

Medical uses of essential oils are countless and have been recorded for hundreds of years. Perfumes, bath bombs and cosmetics make use of essential oils as a natural source of a strong scent. Some oils can be utilized as flavorings in food and drinks, and other oils can be used for cleaning or to add a pleasant smell to cleaning products.

Aromatherapy and Topical Application

Essential oils can deliver their benefits to the body in multiple ways, the most common of which are topical use and aromatherapy provided by using an oil diffuser. Both methods of use can help provide relief during a migraine, though topical use may have a more rapid action to alleviate the symptoms of a migraine.

Using effective oils in a diffuser provides constant exposure to the oils by releasing microscopic particles in vaporized water. Essential oil diffusers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns, and they are easy to clean so that different oils may be used. Inhalation of essential oils is important if the condition is within the body, and as migraines are not a surface illness of the body, aromatherapy is extremely effective in treating migraines.

The most common method of topical application of essential oils for migraines is to dilute the essential oils with a carrier oil, such as grapeseed oil or coconut oil, and apply the oils in a circular motion to the affected areas. For a migraine, diluted oils can be rubbed on the temples, forehead, and back of the neck to reduce the effects.

Peppermint and Lavender

Though many essentials oils can be used for migraines, the two most commonly recommended oils are peppermint and lavender. Both have been proven to relieve tension that causes migraines, and while they work in opposite ways, these oils can work together to stimulate healing in the body.

One of the active ingredients in peppermint essential oils is menthol. This causes the cooling sensation that oil users feel when using peppermint, and this provides a numbness that relieves the tension of a migraine. As a stimulating oil, peppermint provides a burst of clarity and new energy.

Lavender is a soothing oil that relaxes the body and releases stress and anxiety, two of the major causes of migraines. It can also be used to treat depression and assist with insomnia.

Other Essential Oils for Migraines

Among the many other oils used to treat migraines are rosemary oil, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and chamomile oil used to treat anxiety, stress, and depression. Additionally, oils used for improving respiratory and sinus health, such as eucalyptus oil and thyme oil, can alleviate another cause of migraines.

Whether using peppermint oil, lavender oil or both to treat migraines, it is important to ensure that the oils are coming from a trusted source. Essential oils that are not properly distilled, tested and stored can create more health problems than they treat. Quality oils are invaluable in treating migraines, and peppermint and lavender oils are ideal options for alleviating the pain of a migraine.
