Versatile Peppermint and Lavender: Using Essential Oils for Migraines

For a migraine, diluted oils can be rubbed on the temples, forehead, and back of the neck to reduce the effects.

Peppermint and Lavender

Though many essentials oils can be used for migraines, the two most commonly recommended oils are peppermint and lavender. Both have been proven to relieve tension that causes migraines, and while they work in opposite ways, these oils can work together to stimulate healing in the body. 

One of the active ingredients in peppermint essential oils is menthol. This causes the cooling sensation that oil users feel when using peppermint, and this provides a numbness that relieves the tension of a migraine. As a stimulating oil, peppermint provides a burst of clarity and new energy.

Lavender is a soothing oil that relaxes the body and releases stress and anxiety, two of the major causes of migraines. It can also be used to treat depression and assist with insomnia.

Other Essential Oils for Migraines

Among the many other oils used to treat migraines are rosemary oil, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and chamomile oil used to treat anxiety, stress, and depression. Additionally, oils used for improving respiratory and sinus health, such as eucalyptus oil and thyme oil, can alleviate another cause of migraines.

Whether using peppermint oil, lavender oil or both to treat migraines, it is important to ensure that the oils are coming from a trusted source. Essential oils that are not properly distilled, tested and stored can create more health problems than they treat. Quality oils are invaluable in treating migraines, and peppermint and lavender oils are ideal options for alleviating the pain of a migraine.
